These people are special to me. My goal was to make the master bedroom an oasis for the homeowners by removing dated wallpaper, window coverings, old furniture and creating a light filled, well organized, cozy and uncluttered space reflective of their style and taste.

Client story - master bedroom renovation

Here’s a couple that has lived in this home for 27 years and raised their boys. One built a thriving family business while the other held down a career in advertising in NYC for decades. In 2019 it was finally “their” time and they decided to “age in place” and make the updates they’ve always wanted starting with the master bedroom. I proposed reorganizing the closet wall and installing these amazing floor to ceiling doors that would run the entire width and height of the wall.

I then addressed the fundamentals by adding recessed lights overhead, revealed all the windows that provided natural light and added an elegant yet simple treatment that would allow maximum light and privacy. Add to that a great wall color and the narrative shifts dramatically.

Revealing the Unique Character of a Home

Any space that is intentionally created to reveal and build on its unique character and assets while improving other aspects to function extremely well for us and look great doing it is, in my opinion, true luxury. All decisions should be a resounding “absolutely” against questions like: “Is this the best use of this area/space ?”, “Are my needs met?”, “Does this markedly improve operating in this space for me/us?” “Am I inspired aesthetically?”. I feel like that's what we accomplished here.

Following Your Heart in Design

I always say, “what our hearts desire is usually right where we are and it’s our opportunity to make it real”. Light, bright, beautiful, cozy, airy…all the characteristics my clients wanted to experience were right there all along. There were ample windows for natural light, generous square footage, hardwood floors underneath the carpet and a wall that was already designated closet space. That’s the magic and benefit of what I get to bring to clients: vision beyond what they see and/or can manage.
Trust is Critical

Sometimes clients haven’t experienced quality work from tradespeople such as painters, electricians, floor refinishers, etc. As their designer I get to bring my experience to the project of working with different levels of service and together choosing the best fit for them. On this project the clients wanted to use a tradesperson that they’d known for many years and had worked with in the past. I was skeptical that they would meet the set standard but honored my clients wishes. As suspected, the outcome was disappointing to the homeowner. The tradesperson explained away the issues and left it at that offering no resolve. I then called someone who I’d worked with in the past who does quality work to come in and give us an estimate and make an assessment. He explained his process and shared what he felt were missteps with the previous tradesperson. The outcome this time around was absolutely gorgeous and the clients were so pleased. Cost and level of service should be examined together and should equal value to both the client and the service provider.
